JOE
The look in her eyes said she wanted me as badly as I wanted her. It was a struggle to break eye contact with her, but I did so intending to rein myself in.
What was it about her that called to me?
If I hadnât already known she was a shifter, I would have thought she was a witch because she had clearly put a spell on me. Ivy wasnât a witch, though. Which meant whatever I felt for her was honest.
It was real.
But then I remembered the cinnamon rolls weâd eaten from Sugar Sweets Bakery. Would Fern and Neve have put a love spell on us?
It was possible, considering they had picked up on the curse plaguing Ivy. Sometimes witches liked to meddle in othersâ lives, especially in their love lives. There had been chemistry between us even before we ate the cinnamon rolls, though, which meant whatever I felt wasnât likely because of a spell.
What was it then?
I rummaged through the junk drawer in search of tea candles for the pumpkins. Ivy watched me. I could feel her eyes fixed on me. The distance between us wasnât enough to snuff out the flames of desire building inside me for her. A part of me wanted to give in and see where things would go between us if I touched herâif I kissed herâbut a larger part of me knew it wouldnât be right.
Ivy was vulnerable. Maybe even more so than she had been earlier tonight. Alcohol flowed through her veins, and she still hadnât eaten dinner.
When I finally located two tea candles, I held them up and risked a glance at her.
âThere we are. I found two. Ready?â I asked.
She licked her lips as she slid her pumpkin close to me and then pulled the cap off the top. âYep. Letâs see what they look like.â
I lit one of the candles and set it inside her pumpkin. After, I lit the next one and placed it inside mine. Once both were lit, I flipped off the lights and spun them both to face her.
A belly laugh bubbled from her as I walked around the counter to see them myself. âMine looks awful!â She laughed.
I glanced at her pumpkin, noticing how the candlelight barely shone through in places because she hadnât hollowed them out enough. Her spider was missing a legâpossibly two, if you tilted your head just rightâand the web behind him looked slightly deformed.
âI like it. Itâs unique,â I offered, hoping my compliment made her feel better while also sounding genuine.
âYouâre sweet,â she said. âBut Iâm not blind. I know it looks like garbage, especially when compared to yours.â
The candlelight from the pumpkins reflected in her eyes, brightening them, and again I found it hard to look away from her.
God, she was beautiful.
A spark of something ignited her irises. In the next instant, Ivy pressed her lips to mine. I responded immediately, my lips moving against hers. She lifted a hand to squeeze my shoulder, as though holding me in place, and I listened to the sound of her wild heartbeat.
